How to Declutter Your Home Without the Overwhelm

If you’ve ever looked around your home and thought, “Where do I even start?” — you’re not alone!

Decluttering can feel exhausting before you even begin. But here’s the truth:

✨ You don’t need a full weekend
✨ You don’t need a perfect plan
✨ You just need a simple approach that works in your real life

Whether you are a busy mom or just someone looking to declutter your home, below are my simple ways on decluttering your home in a way that won’t overwhelm you or make it seem like such a chore.

I created A Simple Home Reset System for Busy Moms Guide that you can start implementing to make your life that much easier!

Stop Trying to Do Everything at Once

The weekend is here and you try to cram everything that needs to get done and you’re instantly overwhelmed or stressed out with the long to do list.

From experience, this is what leads to burnout, starting a project or clean out, maybe finishing or giving up halfway through.

Instead:

  • Pick one small area
  • Focus only on that
  • Finish it completely
  • Then start on the next item on your to do list

Think:

  • one drawer
  • one closet
  • one small corner
  • one room

Use the 10–15 Minute Rule / 1 Hour Rule

You don’t need hours in the day to feel accomplished; you just need a short burst of focused time.

Set a timer for:

  • 10 minutes (busy day)
  • 15 minutes (if you have more time)
  • 1 hour (full day)

When the timer ends — you’re done. This keeps it manageable and stress-free!

Use 3 Simple Categories

The method that I like to use:

  • Keep → you use and love it
  • Donate → still good, but not for you
  • Trash → broken, expired, unusable

Quick decisions usually lead to faster progress.

Ask These 3 Questions

If you’re stuck on an item, ask:

  • Do I use this regularly?
  • Would I buy this again today?
  • Does this make my life easier?

If the answer is no — it’s probably time to let it go.

Start With the Easiest Areas

The 3 areas I would start with are:

  • junk or trash
  • expired or unused items
  • obvious clutter

Remove Items Immediately

Don’t let piles sit around to help prevent clutter from creeping back in.

  • Throw away the junk or trash right away
  • Take donation items to your car and schedule a drop off
  • Put away the clutter to lessen the mess

Do a Little Every Day

When you have a plan to do something every day, it will help you become more consistent and beat the burnout of the long to do list. You don’t need a massive clean-out, so I recommend trying:

  • one drawer a day
  • one space per day
  • one room a day
  • 10 minutes daily

A Simple Declutter Plan (For Busy Moms)

If you’re short on time, try this:

  • Monday → kitchen drawer
  • Tuesday → living room surfaces
  • Wednesday → bathroom cabinet
  • Thursday → kid’s toys
  • Friday → closets

Completing small tasks daily will limit the overwhelm.
